The IRS is looking to clamp down on tax preparers, as they plan to require paid tax preparers to pass a test and register with the government to increase oversight over a largely unregulated industry. With some million people preparing tax services, the impact will be significant. Preparers will be given three years to meet competency requirements, with an ultimate requirement for them to complete annual training and ethics standards. While this will still not require the same level of oversight, competency, and training that accountants working within CPA firms are required to have, it will ensure that the bar is raised within the tax preparation industry. |
